Saratoga Human Resources Solutions began working with this non-union hospital health system in 2012. Located in Upstate New York, the health network employs 1,200 employees across multiple facilities.
Challenges
In 2015, Saratoga Human Resources Solutions was asked to conduct an assessment of the Human Resources Department and its leadership.
Solutions
We interviewed managers, functional leadership and staff throughout the organization, as well as the entire Human Resources Department staff. We provided a written report to the EVP/COO as well as the Chair of the Board of Directors. The EVP and Board Chair decided to remove the VPHR, and Saratoga Human Resources Solutions was engaged to provide long term, interim HR leadership, as well as multiple additional services to the department and the organization.
We provided the interim VPHR, as well as functional expertise, to quickly fix flawed systems and prepare for large projects, such as annual enrollment and recruiting. The department underwent significant restructuring, with several key department heads recruited to the organization. Internal staff were re-aligned to support the departmental strategy. Saratoga Human Resources Solutions also lead a significant number of key initiatives, such as the development of a market-based compensation system and cultural improvements.
Results
Human Resources is now a key strategic partner across the health system, and HR is a valuable resource to both managers and staff. The rate of vacant positions is the lowest it has been since the organization started tracking this measure over 7 years ago, and the HR staff rank their employment experience at the top of all departments across the health system. Additional metrics:
- Turnover reduced from over 25% annually to near 15%
- Nursing and CNA turnover was cut by more than half
- Employee satisfaction improved from the 8th percentile nationally to the 52nd percentile
